Truth About 6 Unhealthy Foods for You

We like to read from multiple sources to get healthy lifestyle advice, not limiting ourselves to the Zone Plan. Dr. Soram often provides good advice. His look is a bit unconventional since we live in the US, but what he says is basic and sensible.

Below we give a summary of his recommendations concerning the 6 top most unhealthy foods you can eat:

1.Soda

A regular can of soda has 10 teaspoons of sugar, 150 calories, 40mg of caffeine. Also included are food colors and sulphites. Diet sodas skip the teaspoons of sugar, but replace it with the even-more-unhealthy artificial sweeteners. An alarming research in the journal Pediatrics discovered that 56-85% of children drink at least one soft drink per day, and 20% of adolescent males drink four or more sodas per day.

"Parents and health officials must recognize soft drinks for what they are - liquid candy-and do everything they could to return those drinks to their former role as an occasional treat," says the Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI). We have imparted in our children that soda is a treat that you order in a restaurant.

2.Potato Chips & French Fries

These popular snack foods contain acrylamide, a known carcinogen and neurotoxin that is formed when foods are baked or fried at high temperatures.

While CSPI carried out tests on some widely used brands of French fries and chips, they found that the acrylamide in a large order of fast food fries was at least 300 times the amount allowed by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in a glass of water.

When possible, buy the baked variety.

3. Doughnuts

Break a doughnut down and you'll discover nothing more than refined sugar and flour, artificial flavors and partially hydrogenated oil thatis packed with trans fats. They have no redeeming qualities at all.

If the sweet snack is something you just love as a treat, then make them from scratch at home. Buy a donut maker and you can skip the artificial flavors and the oil and trans fats.

4.Coffee Cake & Other Baked Goods

This includes all packed baked goods, including packaged cakes and biscuit mixes. They typically contain high quantities of trans fats and other artificial additives. They often possess the largest level of trans fats since they are not just created from hydrogenated oils, but they're fried in them too.

If you don't want to give up that morning treat, opt for baked goods from your local bakery, they don't use the hydrogenated oil because it does not need a long shelf life.

5. Luncheon Meats or Hot Dogs

Processed meats like hot dogs, sausages, bacon, pepperoni and others contain a carcinogenic precursor known as sodium nitrite.

"Sodium nitrite is a dangerous, cancer-causing ingredient that has no place in the human food supply," says nutritionist Mike Adams, author of the Grocery Warning Manual. According to a study that followed 200,000 people for seven years, people who consumed the most processed meats (hot dogs and sausage) showed a 67% increased risk of pancreatic cancer over those who consumed little or none.

But if you have that craving, the good news is that you can find various varieties of nitrite-free meats in most health food stores.

6. Canned Soup

These are the traditional canned soups, not the fancy new labels that are out or any of the organic kinds that have become popular. Most canned soups have high levels of trans fats, sodium and artificial preservatives like MSG. One cup of canned soup can have almost 1,000 milligrams of salt, which is alarming since the dietary guidelines recommend consuming no more than 2,400 milligrams in an entire day.

Some of the natural and organic brands may be a good alternative. But the easiest way to stay away from this overload of sodium is to make your own homemade soups.

We hope you can remember the 6 list of unhealthy foods and avoid them for you and your family.

Until next time

Scott & Heidi
